Monthly RAOB Super-Adiabatic Lapse Rate Report

April, 2012

 

The monthly NCEP products on this page provide information on soundings with temperature layers exhibiting significant super-adiabatic lapse rates or "supers". The products are derived from the coded messages (TTAA, TTBB, etc.) NCEP receives from each upper-air office daily. The tables do not include the following types of super-adiabatic layers:

(1) Layers with supers between 9.8 C/km and 19.99 C/km. 

(2) Super-adiabatic layers less than 20 meters thick from 1 km aloft to sounding termination

(3) Super-adiabatic layers within 1km of the surface that are less than 35 C/km.

The output was designed to identify as best as possible significant supers that would have likely resulted in a Data Check Message being generated in the RRS upper air software. Sites using the MicroART or W-9000  systems can also use these reports. 

NWS upper air stations should review the products below monthly and take corrective action if necessary.  This includes retraining of observers and verifying that the surface weather observation equipment is properly sited and working correctly.  See the RRS and MicroART software users guides for more information.

IMPORTANT: WMO coding practices, rounding off of data, and additional data processing at NCEP may occasionally result in a 20 C/km (or higher) super appearing in these reports that did not appear as Data Check Message in the upper air software.

P-Botm = pressure level at bottom of super-adiabatic layer
P-top = pressure level at top of super-adiabatic layer
Z-top = Height of top of super-adiabatic layer in meters
THKNS = Layer thickness in meters
T-top = Temperature at top of the super-adiabatic layer
DEL-T = Difference in temperature between top and bottom of the layer
LAPSE = NCEP calculated temperature lapse rate in C/km
